New board members elected, community supporters honored at Senior Resources’ 50th Annual Meeting

The Board of Directors at Senior Resources held its 50th Annual Meeting on January 26, 2018, to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, elect new board members and recognize the support of several key community partners. The FY2017 Annual Report was also presented at the meeting, and can be viewed online at seniorresourcesinc.org/annual-report.
Installed as new board members were Amy Larkin, Corporate Finance Analyst at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina; Matt Mundy, Development Manager with Estates Management Company; and
Chris Zecopoulos, Director of Information & Security at Scott & Corley, P.A
Officers of the Board of Directors were also elected. Libby Tucker, Director of Sales Analysis and Metrics at Colonial Life, will return as president. Todd Timmons, Deputy General Counsel for the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce, will serve again as vice president. Rachel Robinson, Supervisor of Rates & Regulatory Accounting for SCANA, will serve as treasurer. And Mark Hocutt, Vice President and Business Banking Client Manager for Bank of America, will serve as secretary.
Six annual awards were given to individuals and agencies within the community who showed extraordinary support for Senior Resources in FY2017.
The Community Partner Award, given to a corporation, church or organization that has provided major support to Senior Resources through financial donation, sponsorship, or assistance with a major project or needed service, was granted to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. When Senior Resources had to relocate its largest Meals on Wheels distribution center, the church offered its kitchen and fellowship hall as a temporary meal site until renovations could be completed on Senior Resources’ central office. Since August 14, Senior Resources has been packing and distributing 250 meals a day from Good Shepherd.
The Corporate Support Award, given for significant support of Senior Resources through financial donation or in-kind service, was given to Bank of America. Bank of America has supported Senior Resources financially for almost 20 years, and also holds an annual volunteer “blitz” in which Bank of America employees pack and deliver every Meals on Wheels route on a designated day.
The Leonard L. Price Fundraising Award recognizes an individual or group who has gone above and beyond in their fundraising efforts for Senior Resources’ programs, including using their resources to help raise awareness which has aided in the agency’s fundraising efforts. The award was presented to Patti Addison, who served last year as the chairperson of the agency’s successful 50th Anniversary Gala. Patti has also served as president of the Senior Resources board and committed significant time to providing oversight and policy direction to the agency as it sought to provide services to the senior population in Richland County. She remains a regular donor and volunteer for the agency, as well.
The Season of Service Award is given to a volunteer who has served Senior Resources over time with dedication, enthusiasm, passion and distinction. This year’s award was given to Jack Sterne, who has been a Meals on Wheels volunteer for more than 25 years. He is a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, and a former local bookstore owner. In other volunteer roles, he is a 40-year member of the Richland Sertoma Club, where he was named district Sertoman of the year twice, and a former youth sports coach and league official.
The Billy Webster Award is given to a person who exemplifies the spirit of giving. This year, the award was given to Amy Larkin, Vice-Chair of the Senior Corps Community Alliance (SCCA) advisory committee. A CPA with Corporate Finance at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Amy spends her free time attending SCCA meetings, promoting the Senior Corps programs, and seeking donations.
The Deborah Bower Leadership Award was created in 2013 to recognize outstanding leadership service provided by an individual in support of our mission. Debbie Bower was the Executive Director of Senior Resources until her death in 2012. This year’s award was granted to Richland County Council Members Jim Manning and Greg Pearce. Each year, Senior Resources appeals to Richland County Council for funding to serve those seniors on the Meals on Wheels waiting list. Over the years, the agency has had many conversations with County Council about senior services, and the role of the County in those services, but this year, Manning and Pearce worked hard to ensure that additional funding was allocated to senior services. This year, Senior Resources was given an additional $182,400 to address the Meals on Wheels waiting list. This is a 60% increase in funding, which would not have been possible without the leadership of these two council members.

Senior Resources is a non-profit organization that coordinates services, provides resources and encourages the personal choices that allow Columbia’s senior citizens to remain independent. All activities, services and programs of the agency are geared toward promoting independent living, with the goal of helping seniors remain in their homes as long as possible through the support of staff and volunteers, and delaying or preventing institutionalization.
Since 1967, Senior Resources has served Columbia’s frail and elderly residents in three areas:
1) In-home services, including Meals on Wheels, home care, respite care, senior companion services, and case management;
2) Community-based services, including congregate meals, wellness centers, transportation, and physical fitness;
3) Volunteer services, including the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs.
With local, state and federal government funding, as well as contributions from United Way, personal donations and fundraising activities, Senior Resources offers a variety of programs so that our clients can select the assistance they need to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle.
