December 10, 2017

Emily Stone Mitchell, class of 1944, and her husband, Frank Mitchell, Jr. donated $1.7 million to create the Emily Stone Mitchell Scholarship. Columbia College will use this endowment to support students in her memory.

Mitchell began her freshman year at Columbia College during the 1940-1941 school year. She was an active participant in a variety of school clubs and organizations, including Y.W.C.A., Block “C” Club, French Club, Christian Service, May Court, and International Relations Club. She was also a prominent athlete serving in the Athletic Association and a member of the class basketball team and captain of the hockey team. During her freshman year, Mitchell was winner of the tennis tournament. She was president of the Athletic Association during her senior year, “elected for her real activity in the college sport life.”

Mitchell graduated from Columbia College in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. She and her husband both worked together for the National Security Agency (NSA) in Falls Church, Virginia for many years before retiring. She was predeceased by her husband (April 1, 2015). Mrs. Mitchell passed a year later in March 2016 in Asheville, NC.

As a beneficiary of their trust, Columbia College honors the memory of Mrs. Emily Stone Mitchell through a scholarship in her name.

“Their thoughtfulness in planning to create this scholarship highlights the importance of a Columbia College education. The students receiving this scholarship will benefit tremendously,” said John C.B. Smith, chair of the Board of Trustees.

“We are grateful for the generosity Emily and Frank Mitchell provide for current and future students at Columbia College. A gift of this magnitude speaks volumes to the confidence they placed in the education we provide our students,” said Carol A. Moore, interim president.
