The City Manager’s Spotlight provides details about what is happening in the City of Columbia in an effort to keep citizens informed about City operations. Adopt A Senior Pet November Special

Columbia Animal Services will be hosting November as Adopt a Senior Pet Month. During the month of November all adoption fees will be waived for all dogs and cats that are 5 years and older. All adoptions include spay/neuter, microchip, Feline Leukemia/Heartworm Test, initial vaccines and deworming

City of Columbia Municipal Election Update

The following individuals filed for the November 7, 2017 Municipal Election:

  • Stephen K. Benjamin (incumbent) filed for the Mayoral Seat
  • Tameika Isaac Devine (incumbent) filed for the At-Large Seat
  • Joseph Azar filed for the At-Large Seat
  • Sam Davis (incumbent) filed for the District I Seat
  • Christopher A. Sullivan, Sr. filed for the District I Seat
  • Daniel J. Rickenmann (incumbent) filed for the District IV Seat

No person filed a declaration to be a write-in candidate for the November 7, 2017 Municipal Election. Therefore, pursuant to South Carolina Code of Laws §7-13-190(E) the following seats will not appear on the November 7, 2017 ballot for the Municipal Election.

  • Mayor (Stephen K. Benjamin)
  • District IV Council member (Daniel J. Rickenmann)

The certification of all election results will take place on Thursday, November 9, 2017.

Treasured Trees Nominations Underway

Nominations are currently being accepted for the Treasured Trees Program. This program seeks to document and preserve trees that are significant for a variety of reasons. Trees can be superior in size, scarce, associated with historical events or just a great place to swing or climb.

For a tree to be considered for this program, it must be located on public or private property in the Greater Columbia Metropolitan Area.

Nominations should include a description of the tree, the tree’s location and a photograph of the tree.

Nominations are due by Nov. 10.

City of Columbia’s 39th Annual Veterans Day Parade

The City of Columbia will host one of the Southeast’s largest Veterans Day Parade on Friday, November 10.

The 39th Annual Veterans Day Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. from the intersection of Sumter and Laurel streets, and travel southbound on Sumter Street ending at Pendleton Street near the State House.

This year’s grand marshal will be retired Col. Jack Van Loan. Van Loan was a Vietnam War Air Force fighter pilot who was shot down during his 74th combat mission and spent six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam before he was released in 1973.

The Veterans Day Parade is sponsored by the City of Columbia, AARP and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina.

Upcoming Meetings

(November 7th is Election Day)

There will only be one meeting for the month of November. (Nov. 21)

Council voted to cancel the Nov. 7th meeting due to election day.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals meeting will take place on November 14, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Design and Development Review Commission 

The Design and Development Review Commission meeting will take place on November 9, 2017, at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall

City Council Meeting

On November 21, 2017 City Council will hold work session starting at 2:00 p.m. and a City Council Meeting at 6 p.m., in the City Council Chambers.

BPAC

One November 13, 2017 the monthly Bike Pedestrian Advisory Committee meeting will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Main Richland Public Library, 1431 Assembly St., in Room 213.

23-24 November, 2017

City Offices to Close in Observance of Thanksgiving Holiday

 

The City of Columbia offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 23, 2017 and Friday, November 24, 2017.

All garbage and recycling pickup scheduled for Thursday, November 23, 2017 will be rescheduled for pickup on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

All garbage and recycle pickup will resume to regular schedule on Friday, November 24, 2017.
