City Foods Cooperative Membership drive success

October 23, 2017

In observance of National Cooperative Month, more than 30 citizens became members of the City Foods Cooperative. The City Foods Cooperative press conference was held on Friday, October 20, where Mayor Steve Benjamin announced the launch of the City Foods Cooperative Marketplace’s Membership Drive.

During the press conference, Mayor Steve Benjamin introduced the steering committee and acknowledged the City’s partnership with the City Foods Cooperative Marketplace. The steering committee provided an update on the status of the cooperative and provided information on how to become an owner.

The food cooperative is an initiative led by Mayor Steve Benjamin designed to meet the community’s need for healthy food options after the closing of the Piggly Wiggly on West Beltline Blvd. in 2016. The City Foods Cooperative store will be located in the 3400 block of West Beltline Blvd. The cooperative will allow its customers to be owners of the grocery store by using the cooperative model, the community will have a self-sustaining asset owned by the community when the project is completed.

“The co-operative is one of the most exciting things that we’ve done as a city,” said Mayor Steve Benjamin. “Recognizing the age-old power of cooperative economics to address a major community need is a sign of a city on the rise.”

The City Foods Cooperative Membership is available for all citizens. The one-time membership fee for the cooperative is $150.
