Midlands Technical College advisor selected for Honor Society International Alumni Board

October 17, 2017

Midlands Technical College advisor and alumna Sara Oswald has been selected to serve as the Division One Vice President Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK) Alumni Advisory Board. The PTK Honor Society recognizes academic achievement of college students and provides them opportunities to grow as scholars and leaders.

Oswald will represent the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, and the District of Columbia.

The Alumni Advisory Board is made up of twenty-five Phi Theta Kappa alumni from around the world. This group elects a vice president from each of the society’s four geographic divisions. Among other duties, council members provide advice to Headquarters and the Board of Directors, support the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, and identify ways alumni and associations can best serve the current membership of Phi Theta Kappa.

“Being able to assist students in identifying and reaching their own academic and leadership goals has been my greatest achievement during my time as a Phi Theta Kappan,” Oswald said.

Oswald began her relationship with PTK as a student at Midlands Technical College where she served as chapter president. From MTC she went on to graduate from Harvard University in 2014 before returning to MTC to work as the Alpha Eta Kappa Alumni Advisor. Alpha Eta Kappa is MTC’s chapter of PTK. Oswald said her relationship with PTK has had a tremendous impact on the path she took as a student and as a professional in higher education.

“Before Phi Theta Kappa, I did not realize that as a two-year college student, I had the opportunity to successfully transfer to the most competitive universities in the world,” said Oswald. “My education at Midlands Technical College prepared me for academically rigorous work, and Phi Theta Kappa provided the pathway to an Ivy League education funded by an exclusive scholarship.”

In addition to personal and leadership development, Phi Theta Kappa also provides access to more than $90,000,000 in scholarships for two-year college students, transfer students to four-year colleges and universities, and alumni members pursuing post-graduate education. Phi Theta Kappa International is the largest, two-year honor society, with nearly three million scholars and servant leaders on more than 1,285 campuses worldwide.
