Shadows and Science at Congaree National Park

July 19, 2017

Staff at Congaree National Park and community members in Lower Richland are busy preparing for a total solar eclipse which is set to occur on Monday, August 21.  The path of the eclipse, also known as the “Path of Totality” will include South Carolina with Lower Richland and Congaree National Park located directly in the path. As the sun begins to be obscured by the moon, darkness will begin to settle on the region.  For approximately 2 ½ minutes the sun will be completely blocked with only its outer rays visible.  The great outdoors will be on full display in the wild areas found in and around Congaree National Park and the rural communities of Lower Richland.  A wide range of activities and viewing opportunities will be available in the park and surrounding area and will celebrate this special occurrence.

Shadows and Science at Congaree National Park will take place August 19, 20 and 21.  The special event will feature educational programs, exhibits and activities in the park which will focus on science and the natural world and will culminate with the eclipse on Monday, August 21.  The day of the eclipse will feature viewing areas, special ranger programs and guided hikes which will lead to prime viewing locations in the park.  “We are excited to take part in such a unique event,” says Park Superintendent Tracy Stakely, “The day of the eclipse we will be working with some of our park neighbors to ensure that everyone has a safe, memorable experience.”  As part of the community efforts, Southeast Community Outreach (SERCO) will also be hosting an eclipse event at the historic Harriet Barber House located on Lower Richland Boulevard near the park.

In an effort to promote safe viewing and a unique experience, the numbers of visitors will be limited on guided hikes and in the park on Monday, August 21, the day of the eclipse.  Reservations can be made for the guided hikes beginning on Friday, July 21 by visiting the park website at www.nps.gov/cong.  Park gates will be closed when parking areas become filled and will reopen as space is available.  Visitors wishing to come to the park that day are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.  Special eclipse viewing glasses will be made available to all who participate at the park and the Harriet Barber House.  All activities are free of charge at both locations.
