John Wagner & Friends at Newberry Opera House

Sunday, September 11 at 3:00 P.M.

The John Wagner and Friends concert is scheduled for 3 PM Sunday, September 11, at the Newberry Opera House.  The program is a continuation of the John, Janet, and Jazz programs which were begun in 2002, and is the fifteenth in the series.  The concert is presented by Dr. John W. Wagner, clarinetist and flutist, and Professor of Music Emeritus at Newberry College.

The first half of the program includes Flighting, for solo clarinet, written by Michael Berkeley, a contemporary British composer; and Johannes Brahms’ Trio for Clarinet, ‘Cello, and Piano, Opus 114.  Sharing in the performance of the Brahms work will be pianist Kimberlee Turnbough and ‘cellist Brenda Leonard.

Mrs. Turnbough has been Piano Instructor and Staff Accompanist at Newberry College.  She received the Master of Music degree in piano performance from the University of South Carolina, where she was a student of Charles Fugo.

Dr. Leonard is a member of the faculty at North Greenville University and principal ‘cellist with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra.  She earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in cello from USC, studying with Robert Jesselson.

After a brief intermission the remainder of the program will feature a selection of popular songs played in a jazz style by Wagner on clarinet and flute, assisted by Shawn Hair, piano; Jared Poole, bass; and Josh Capone, drums.  Vocalist Millie Keefe Black will also be featured on several of these pieces.  Ms. Black and Messrs. Hair and Poole all have ties to Newberry College.  The program is free and open to the public.

FAL credit will be given to qualifying Newberry College students.
