Be more productive – Break big tasks into small chunks

It’s OK if you find more productive ways to work.
You can work until the task is finished.
Or you can work for shorter periods with breaks.
I tend to work in shorter bursts, then take a break.
I find breaking projects into chucks works for me.

Writing a newspaper column takes about an hour.
I go at it passionately, full speed ahead
Then I take a break. It seems to clear my head.
I come back to editing it more analytically minded.
I may let it sit overnight before another editing.

My 1,500-word leadership columns take two hours.
That’s just the first draft. It may take two drafts.
Then I let it rest overnight before editing.
It may take two or three days before my editor sees it.
I depend on her as these are published nationally.
Each one becomes a chapter in a future book.
I’ve found eBooks even faster to write and publish.
Some become the basis for a speaking engagement.
Others are 10-15 minute segments for a seminar.
I try to get multiple uses from everything I write.

Weekly 300-word articles like this are similar.
They take 30-40 minutes, including editing time.
I depend on my editor to edit them, too.
Writers need editors to save them from themselves.

Sometimes it’s hard to finish big tasks.
My first book took four years to write.
I’ve since completed one in less than a month.
I wrote one while on vacation in Arizona.
Many of us suffer from big project phobia.
We ambitiously tackle intimidating projects.
We want all of them to make a difference.
The Pomodoro Technique has helped me.
I explained it in last week’s article.
Email me if you missed it and I’ll send it to you.
