Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Society of South Carolina celebrates 50 years of promoting excellence in the insurance industry through ethical behavior and continuing education.

To celebrate this milestone the chapter held a reception Jan. 27 at noon in Columbia, S.C. More than 40 people attended the reception including South Carolina Director of Insurance Ray Farmer and CPCU Society Governor for the Mid Atlantic Carolinas Territory Chris Long who gave a few congratulatory remarks.

“It is an honor to serve as president of our chapter as we begin our fiftieth year,” Gail Sanders, CPCU Society South Carolina president, said. “The recent celebration was a great way to kick-off our year while taking time to reflect on our past events and former members.”

The South Carolina chapter was founded in 1966 by Fred Carlton, Charlie Koon and Lanville Mengedoht. They elected the following officers to serve from 1966 to 1967: President Carlos Jerden, Vice President Fred Donham and Secretary and Treasurer Frank Dana. Unfortunately none of the founding members or original officers could be present for the reception.

Today, the South Carolina chapter has more than 170 members who hold the prestigious CPCU designation and is one of 130 chapters in the world. The CPCU designation is conferred by The Institutes and requires passing eight rigorous undergraduate-level and graduate-level examinations, meeting an experience requirement, and agreeing to be bound by a strict code of professional ethics.
