Benedict College to hold auditions for the classic stage play A Raisin in the Sun

The Benedict College Theatre Ensemble will hold auditions for the Spring Stage Production “A Raisin in the Sun” written by Lorraine Hansberry and directed by Professor Charles D. Brooks, III. The auditions will be held on Monday, January 11th through Friday, January 15th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Ponder Fine Arts/Humanities Center Conference Room B in room 302 on the College campus.

A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, reveals a brief moment in the life of an African-American family, called the Youngers, living, in the slums, on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. As the play opens, the Youngers are about to receive a check for $10,000 from the deceased Mr. Younger’s life insurance policy. Ideas surface as to what each family member would like to do with this money. The matriarch of the family, Mama, wants to buy a house to fulfill a dream she shared with her husband. Mama’s son, Walter Lee wants to feel like a man, and to use the money to invest in a liquor store with his friends. He believes that black folks love to drink alcohol and would supply money and solve the family’s financial problems forever. Walter’s wife, Ruth, agrees with Mama, however, and hopes that she and Walter can provide more space and opportunity for their son, Travis. Finally, Beneatha, Walter’s sister and Mama’s daughter, wants to use the money for her medical school tuition. She also wishes that her family members were not so interested in joining the white world. Beneatha instead tries to find her identity by looking back to the past and to Africa.
