Paulette Brown visits Columbia for two days of events

COLUMBIA, SC – The newly elected President of the American Bar Association is coming to Columbia next week with a message of “rebuilding the nation’s confidence in our justice system.” Paulette Brown will lead two days of events that will focus on diversity and inclusion in our justice system.

“Working to eliminate bias and enhance diversity and inclusion is one of the four goals of the ABA and it is critically important that the ABA increase its efforts at this time in our nation’s history,” said Brown when her Presidency was announced last month.

While in Columbia on Monday and Tuesday, Brown will take part in a continuing legal education course for attorneys, speak to students at Columbia College and the University of South Carolina Law School, visit with children through Cocky’s Reading Express and the Boys and Girls Club. Plus, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin will join her for a “My Brother’s Keeper” roundtable discussion on Tuesday evening that will look for ways to close the “school to prison pipeline.”

“Right now too many of our children are inches away from making the kind of mistake that can turn a life of promise and possibility into a statistic,” Mayor Benjamin said. “It’s up to us to engage them, challenge them and show them how much we love them, support them and believe in them because if we don’t the gangs will.”
