City of Columbia Officials Issue Statements Regarding Charleston Shooting Incident

COLUMBIA, SC – The City of Columbia is urging all citizens to be cautious and aware of their surroundings during the ongoing manhunt for the suspect in the Charleston shooting incident.  Law enforcement officials are working together diligently to search for and apprehend the suspect.  City of Columbia officials have issued statements regarding this current situation and all are urging caution and asking citizens to report any information to law enforcement officials. Those statements are included below:

Statement from Mayor Steve Benjamin:

“We understand that this is a quickly developing situation and we are confident that our law enforcement will continue to make as much information available as quickly as possible to keep everyone fully informed and engaged. We ask for every citizen’s full cooperation as we work together in response to this tragedy.”

Statement from City Manager Teresa Wilson:

“As a city family, we are deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless incident that occurred last night.  Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and the citizens of Charleston, South Carolina.  As a municipality, we are deeply impacted and we stand ready to assist our counterparts in Charleston in any way. We urge all citizens in Columbia to be cautious and aware of your surroundings.  I personally have issued a directive to my executive management team to notify all City of Columbia staff to do the same until the suspect is apprehended.”

 

Statement from Police Chief William Holbrook:

“The Columbia Police Department is assisting In this matter as requested. The Columbia Police Department is taking a vigilant posture throughout the city as this situation continues to develop.”
