Lights Out for #EarthHour in the City of Columbia

March 22, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – On Saturday March 28, 2015 at 8:30pm, the City of Columbia will join hundreds of millions of other cities, businesses and organizations across the globe in switching off all nonessential lights in City buildings for one hour – Earth Hour, the world’s largest public environmental action. By taking part in this global event the City will be acknowledging its commitment to personal and operational actions that benefit the planet in the year ahead.

The City of Columbia has taken steps to go beyond Earth Hour by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency, including establishing the Climate Protection Action Campaign (CPAC), retrofitting light fixtures in all City facilities and planting trees via the 10,000 Trees program.

The City is encouraging citizens to also participate in Earth Hour by turning off lights, and unplugging appliances using electricity for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.and by encouraging their neighbors, local businesses and organizations to join in the effort to increase energy conservation.
