Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awards $101,690 to Grantees

COLUMBIA, SC – The Sisters of Charity Foundation awards $101,690 to 35 Caritas grantees.

“In omnibus caritas” means In all things charity.  Since its inception in 1851, the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine has sought to put into practice these simple but all-encompassing words.  As a ministry of the Sisters, the Foundation offers Caritas Grant funds to be awarded to non-profit and faith-based organizations meeting the immediate needs of the poor in South Carolina.

The Caritas Grants program purpose is to provide support to organizations dealing with situational poverty or crisis poverty. The demand for food, clothing, shelter and free health programs as well as other immediate needs is expanding for organizations providing these services. Caritas Grant awards will be up to $5,000 for a one-year period.

The 2014 Caritas Grantees are:

Abbeville Free Medical Clinic – ($3,000) Free health care services for low-income uninsured individuals.(Abbeville)

Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Charleston – ($2,500) Offering professional eye exams, follow-up care, education, and eyewear free of charge to low-income individuals with no vision insurance.(Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester)

Bluffton Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine – ($2,500) Providing diabetic patients with diagnostic testing, blood glucose testing, test strips, glucose meters and insulin. (Beaufort, Jasper)

CareFIRST Carolina Foundation – ($3,000) Serving patients in desperate emergency need of specialty care like mammograms, pathology testing, specialty OB/GYN, eye exams, emergency dental assistance, specialty provider consultations, and emergency medications. (Lee, Darlington, Marlboro, Dillon, Chesterfield)

Catawba Care – ($5,000) A community health center which serves uninsured, underinsured, and/or low-income patients. (York)

Catholic Counseling Services – ($3,000) Providing psychological services to indigent and uninsured individuals. (Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Beaufort, Richland, Horry)

Circle of Hope Ministries – ($1,000) A care center for the homeless providing hot meals, showers, laundry services, and a warming/cooling center during extreme weather conditions. (Beaufort)

Classy Smiles – ($2,500) Delivering direct dental services to uninsured children in need. (Georgetown, Horry, Williamsburg, Barnwell, Florence)

Coastal Rescue Mission – ($5,000) Providing food to needy families. (Horry)

Columbia Oral Health Clinic – ($5,000) State of the art preventative dental services for uninsured HIV/AIDS patients. (Lexington, Richland, Sumter, Orangeburg, Fairfield, Kershaw)

Faith Assembly of God Church @ Remount – ($2,000) A food bank ministry providing food, emergency financial assistance and clothing to those in need. (Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester)

Fast Forward – ($1,000) A program that provides bicycles, helmets, and reflective/protective gear to newly re-employed veterans who are in need of transportation. (Richland, Lexington)

Free Medical Clinic of Darlington County – ($3,000) A medical clinic for low-income adults who are uninsured. (Darlington)

Friendship Medical Clinic and Pharmacy – ($3,000) Funding to provide medications and diabetic supplies to low-income adults who are uninsured. (Horry)

Friendship Place – ($5,000) Feeding the hungry daily with hot meals and bagged lunches. (Georgetown)

Golden Corner Food Pantry – ($2,000) A nutritional food distribution program for low-income families.(Oconee)

Good Samaritan Clinic – ($5,000) Dental services for the poor and uninsured. (Lexington, Richland)

Grace Ministries – ($5,000) Providing transportation services to individuals who are home-bound due to age, chronic illness, or disability. (Horry, Georgetown)

Hands of Christ – ($3,500) Clothing and school supplies for needy children. (Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, Williamsburg)

Help 4 Kids – ($1,000) Snack packs for children who qualify for free lunch at school so that they do not go hungry during weekends and holidays. (Horry) 

Help of Beaufort – ($4,690) Funding for a large commercial freezer for an emergency food pantry. (Beaufort, Hampton, Jasper, Colleton)

Helping Hands of Georgetown – ($3,000) An emergency food pantry for the poor. (Georgetown)

Home Works of America – ($2,000) Free home repairs and safety upgrades for disadvantaged homeowners.(Richland)

Jordan Crossroads Ministry Center – ($5,000) A shelter for female victims of domestic violence. (South Carolina, Clarendon, Sumter, Lee, Dorchester, Richland)

Lutheran Social Services of the Greater Charleston Area – ($3,000) An emergency feeding program for those in need. (Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester)

Meals On Wheels Bluffton-Hilton Head – ($2,000) Delivering nourishing meals to the homebound. (Beaufort)

Midland Park Community Ministries – ($1,000) Emergency food, clothing and financial assistance for the needy. (Charleston)

Midlands Holy Family Fund – ($1,000) Providing emergency assistance to those in need. (Richland)

New Directions of Horry County – ($5,000) A program that provides outreach services to the homeless and victims of domestic violence. (Horry)

North Greenville Food Crisis Ministry – ($3,000) Distributing food to individuals facing crisis situations.(Greenville)

Oconee Medical Center Foundation – ($2,000) Dental services for the poor and uninsured. (Oconee, Pickens)

Operation Home – ($1,000) Providing handicap ramps and home modifications to elderly or disabled.(Berkeley, Dorchester, Charleston)

Revelation Church of Word and Deed – ($2,500) Distributing food baskets to families in need. (Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester)

Stella Maris St. Vincent de Paul Society – ($2,000) Supplying nutritional supplements to elderly homebound individuals. (Charleston)

Vital Aging of Williamsburg County – ($1,500) Providing home delivered meals to low-income seniors.(Williamsburg)

Georgetown County School District-Kensington Elementary School – ($3,000) Providing assistance to needy students and their families during the holidays. (Georgetown)

Lab S Helping Hands – ($750) A food distribution program for the poor. (Lee, Sumter, Darlington)

Lancaster County Outreach Project – ($1,500) Providing outreach and resources to foster children and their families. (Lancaster, Kershaw, York)

M.K. Inc. – ($2,500) An after school feeding program for at-risk kids. (Georgetown)

Med-I-Assist– ($1,500) Offering emergency medical assistance to the needy. (Beaufort, Jasper)

Midlands Holy Family Fund – ($1,000) Providing emergency assistance to those in need. (Richland)

PK Outreach – ($2,000) Funding to help clients with first month’s rent and deposit when moving from a shelter into housing.  (Spartanburg)

Pro Bono Legal Services – ($3,000) Providing legal services to the poor. (Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley)

Riverside Community Development Corporation – ($2,000) Funding for emergency assistance to needy families. (Saluda)

Roscoe Reading Program – ($3,000) Support for a program that uses therapy dogs and provides incentives and prizes to encourage reading amongst elementary school students. (Berkeley)

Sewee to Santee Economic Foundation – ($2,500) Home improvements for low income senior citizens.(Charleston)

St. Christopher’s Children – ($2,000) Providing basic clothing to needy children. (Georgetown)

St. John’s Episcopal Church – ($1,000) Distributing weekend meals to needy public school students and their families. (Florence)

St. Mary Catholic Church Social Concerns Outreach– ($2,500) Funding for a soup kitchen and program providing emergency assistance to those in need. (York)

Teachers Supply Closet – ($2,000) Providing school supplies to children in need. (Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley)

The Naomi Project – ($2,500) A long-term transitional housing program for victims of domestic abuse.(Florence, Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Marlboro, Marion)

The Lighthouse Ministries – ($3,000) Assisting individuals and families who are unable to meet basic needs due to a crisis and are pending an eviction due to no fault of their own. (Florence)

Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church – ($1,500) Funding for an emergency food pantry. (Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester)
