Two named to John de la Howe School Board

COLUMBIA, SC – Gov. Nikki Haley has appointed two new trustees to John de la Howe School in McCormick.

Tom Love of McCormick and Dan Shonka of Central have been confirmed by the South Carolina Senate to begin five-year terms on the governing board of the 217-year-old institution, which serves children from across South Carolina in grades 6-12 who require a safe place to heal, grow and make lasting changes in their lives.

Love, who earned an undergraduate degree in outdoor resource management from Columbus State University, was a member of the John de la Howe School staff for 20 years. He also serves as Chief of the Little River Volunteer Fire Department and on the boards of the McCormick Children’s Home and Willington on the Way.

Shonka is a retired educator, having taught in South Carolina public schools for 31 years. During his teaching career, he instructed sixth grade history and also coached a variety of sports at different schools, including track at D.W. Daniel High School in Central. The Nebraska native earned a degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in secondary education from Clemson University.

In addition to Love and Shonka, the John de la Howe Board is comprised of Barbara Devinney of McCormick,  Felicia Preston of Columbia, and Patricia Silva and Donna Wesby, both of Aiken.
