Representative G. Murrell Smith, Jr presented with STSM 2014 Public Servant Award
May 21, 2014COLUMBIA, SC – Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands will celebrate the opening of a new office dedicated to serving Sumter County and honor Representative G. Murrell Smith, Jr. with the 2014 Public Servant Award on Thursday, May 21, 2014 at 5:30pm. An open house reception will take place from 4:00pm-7:00pm.
G. Murrell Smith, Jr. was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Public Servant Award for his commitment to ending violence. Representative Smith has been a tireless advocate for Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands in Sumter County helping to establish new relationships and to promote Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands services in the community. In addition, Representative Smith was key in helping to restore DHEC funding for sexual assault service agencies in the state budget. This funding is vital to ensure that survivors of sexual violence have access to healing services.
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands Executive Director Ginny Waller says, “We are so fortunate to work with leaders like Representative Smith. He has introduced us to many community partners as we establish our Sumter County office and services. His leadership in the State House shows that he recognizes the harmful and costly effects of sexual violence in Sumter County and in the state of South Carolina and is committed to being part of the solution to end sexual violence.”
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands adopted Sumter County as a service area in 2012 and is committed to providing the highest quality, no-cost trauma focused services for survivors of sexual violence and sexual violence prevention education to the community.
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midland’s Sumter County office is located at 533C Oxford Street. A full-time Community Advocate and Prevention Specialist serves Sumter County and is dedicated to providing sexual violence prevention education to the community and crisis intervention and advocacy for survivors in Sumter County. Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands works with local volunteers to provide 24-7 hospital accompaniment for survivors of sexual assault who seek medical treatment at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM), formerly named Rape Crisis Network, is a private, nonprofit, United Way member agency committed to providing free support to survivors of sexual assault and abuse, including 24-hour crisis hotline, hospital accompaniment, court accompaniment, personal advocacy, and individual and group counseling, and education to the community to identify and prevent sexual violence.
