May 19, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Providence Hospitals announced its 2014 Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial Scholarship Award at a ceremony last evening. Recipient Meredith Calcina, a fourth year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, will graduate in May 2014 and is applying to residency programs in Pediatrics.

“Her thorough clinical work in the hospital has only been overshadowed by her outstanding bedside manner. She is caring, compassionate, patient and encouraging,” notes Tommy Suggs, Chair, Providence Hospitals Development Foundation Board of Trustees. “She is an excellent representation of the legacy of Dr. Preston Jones.”

Calcina, who is ranked 16th in her class, is also very involved in her school and community. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Saunders Humanism Honor Society. Additionally, she has served on the USC School of Medicine Admission Committee and the Women in Science Committee. In the community, Calcina has participated in the Girls on the Run Program and the Healthy Columbia Campaign.

To honor the legacy of the late Dr. Preston A. Jones, Providence Hospitals established a scholarship in his name in 2009 through the generous support of donors wishing to continue his legacy of excellence. Calcina received the scholarship on April 23, 2014 at a reception held at the Palmetto Club.
