April 1, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – April 1, 2013 –  The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house film theater and its annual independent film festival, Indie Grits, have received a $5,000 grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which will be used for Cinemovements at Indie Grits Festival. Cinemovements takes place April 15, 2013 at 320 Senate. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the performance starts at 8 p.m.

The second installment of this event is a collaborative effort between the South Carolina Philharmonic and Indie Grits pairing original silent films with a live performance by musicians of original music by S.C. Philharmonic Concertmaster Mary Lee Taylor Kinosian. Indie Grits Festival has commissioned films by Indie Grits alumni filmmakers, including Roger Beebe, Steve Daniels, David Montgomery, Gideon C. Kennedy and Marcus Rosenstrater. Audience members will have the chance to participate in talkbacks with the filmmaker after each short film and performance.

“Indie Grits continues to provide innovative programming year after year, and we were so happy working with the S.C. Phil on Cinemovements last year,” said Andy Smith, executive director of the Nickelodeon Theatre and head of Indie Grits Festival. “We are honored to be awarded this prestigious grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which will enable this year’s Cinemovements to take place. Cinemovements is an event that’s so unique to Indie Grits, and we’re pleased to bring it back, by popular demand, to our Indie Grits festival-goers this year.”

“We were delighted to hear about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences grant that will enable us to collaborate with the Indie Grits Festival again. This is such an innovative and unique way to bring live symphonic music and filmmaking together and we are all grateful for the opportunity,” said Rhonda Hunsinger, executive director of the South Carolina Philharmonic.
