Nearly everything about the movie-going experience at the Nickelodeon Theatre has improved at the theater’s new home at 1607 Main Street. Moviegoers will now find separate, improved ticketing and concessions areas, as well as more seats, a larger screen and state-of-the-art projection equipment.
The new theater will house the organization’s Helen Hill Media Education Center, which will facilitate the Nickelodeon’s film education program. The Nickelodeon also anticipates the larger, upstairs theater opening in 2013, when the theater projects it will welcome at least 60,000 visitors to the theater and Main Street annually.
The Nickelodeon began plotting this move several years ago and has since been an integral part of Main Street revitalization in Columbia. Through its improved facilities and important institutional training through the Kennedy Center’s DeVos Institute for Arts Management, the theater’s move will cement the Nickelodeon’s position as a leader on the Southeastern United States film and cinema scene.
