Guignard Park Playground Project Breaks Ground
June 26, 2008CAYCE, SC – June 26, 2008 – The City of Cayce and the New Brookland Lions Club are proud to announce that they have broken ground for the soon-to-be New Brookland Lions Playground located in Guignard Park on Knox Abbott Drive. The groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday, June 25 at the park. The playground will be accessible and fun for all children, being equipped with wheelchair access, Braille games and many other non-sight related activities.
The playground project is a few years in the making, which is why the New Brookland Lions Club is so excited to see its dream realized. The Lions Club internationally performs service projects in local areas often related to vision programs and the New Brookland chapter continues this practice, performing many service projects in the community. President of the club, Kevin Schumacher, says that members wanted to do something “permanent and visible to the citizens of Cayce.” They found that Guignard Park was the perfect space to build a playground.
The club began a series of fundraisers for the playground project and had the backing of the City of Cayce, which agreed to match a great deal of funding. Schumacher was determined to “make the project happen” when he became President of the New Brookland Lions Club. With the support of major sponsors Eat More Tees, CMC Steel, Logic South, SC Farm Bureau, Belk’s and longtime largest sponsor, Giles Allstate, the playground goal was able to be made a reality.
The playground is set to open in approximately two months and is aimed for children from ages five to 12. Guignard Park, often referred to as “The Jewel of Cayce”, will then be able to accommodate children like never before and is sure to be a family favorite in the City of Cayce.
