First Citizens Associates Redefine the Mission of Home Repair: Volunteer Time to Home Works

COLUMBIA, SC – November 19, 2007 – Service to the community is something that First Citizens takes seriously. For the past several years, First Citizens has sponsored a work day for Home Works, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides home repairs to homeowners in need, assists youth in their development, and empowers communities to meet the wishes of its members.
Approximately 40 First Citizens volunteers arrived at the jobsite in Eau Claire on Oct.16 to make roof repairs at no charge to the homeowner. “We are proud to be one of Home Works’ partners,” said John Freeman of First Citizens’ corporate real estate services division. “Allowing employees to volunteer for the project on company time demonstrates First Citizens’ commitment to its employees and community,” he said.
Business and individual partners provide Home Works with donated products, funds, and labor to carry on its mission. Adult volunteers not only use their skills in home repairs but they teach and lead young adults. They provide supervision, leadership, inspiration and encourage youth participants in their work and personal growth. “We are thankful and appreciative of First Citizens’ support. Their employees have helped in the actual repairs and they been instrumental financially in donating to Home Works,” stated Hank Chardos, executive director of Home Works.
“It is such a rewarding experience to participate in the Home Works project,” stated Donna Price, a First Citizens Home Works volunteer. “Once the work is finished, you see the appreciation beaming through the homeowners tearful eyes.”
