Lake Murray Jaycees Charter is Founded

Columbia, SC – October 2, 2007 – A group of young professionals in the Irmo/Lake Murray community have joined together to form the newest group in Columbia.
The Lake Murray Chapter of the Columbia Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) was recently founded and is gaining momentum. The organizers of the group and governing officers include Angie Wedekind, President; Brian Haddock, Vice President; Kelly Winfree, Secretary, Trip Newsome, Treasurer.
“The Lake Murray Jaycees were founded because of the need for a service based organization in the Lake Murray area. I was inspired by a speech by Sandy Fordham, the Georgia State President to look at the number and types of people I knew. I then realized that I knew enough individuals to start a chapter,” stated Angie Wedekind, Lake Murray Jaycees founder.
Goals of the Lake Murray Jaycees include: To enhance the lives of our members and the community by teaching leadership skills, networking skills, family life skills, individual development through community service projects.
The primary state charity the Lake Murray Jaycees will focus on is Camp Hope at Clemson University, a Camp for physically and mentally disabled individuals of all ages. Local charities we are currently supporting are Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Healthy Learner’s a Sister of Charities Organization.
The first Lake Murray Project is taking place on Saturday, September 29, 2007 @ Canine Country in Prosperity funds raised will benefit the Newberry Humane Society. Many other events are currently being scheduled.

Meeting dates are the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Temporary location is at Friarsgate Park in Irmo, SC.
About the Jaycees
The United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees) gives young people between the ages of 18 and 40 the tools they need to build the bridges of success for themselves in the areas of business development, management skills, individual training, community service, and international connections. The U.S. Junior Chamber is a non-profit corporation/organization as described under IRS code 501 (c)(3).
Established in 1920 to provide opportunities for young men to develop personal and leadership skills through service to others, the Jaycees later expanded to include women, reflecting the growing influence and leadership of women in America. For the past 86 years, Jaycees have built parks, playgrounds, hospitals, ball fields, and housing for the elderly while conducting service and support programs in thousands of communities nationwide.
With the focus of the nation on volunteerism, from the smallest towns to the largest cities, the Jaycees are enlarging areas of opportunity for young people.
