SCE&G to release water for white water event
July 14, 2007COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 13, 2007) – SCE&G will release water from the Saluda Hydroelectric Plant at Lake Murray throughout the week of July 16 to accommodate the Junior Wildwater World Championships, sponsored by the International Canoe Federation (ICF). This event will bring in more than 80 athletes from around the world for individual and team races in both kayaks and canoes. The athletes will race in a three-mile classic race on the Saluda River in Columbia near the Riverbanks Zoo.
Water will be released beginning in the early morning and continuing through early afternoon each day, July 16 through July 19. Users of the Saluda River during this time are advised to use caution, especially in areas where swift water can be hazardous. Total impact to the level of Lake Murray is estimated to be less than three inches.
“It is not every day that an international event of this magnitude comes to our area,” said Jim Landreth, vice president of Fossil and Hydro Operations for SCE&G. “We are happy to support events such as this that bring world class recognition to the Midlands, promoting recreational opportunities and bringing economic benefits to the area.”
SCE&G provides information on current and planned releases from the Saluda Plant on its Web site, www.sceg.com. The page, listed under the “My Community” link, provides, as nearly as possible, real-time flow conditions on the river as well as links to helpful resources from the U.S. Geological Survey, the S.C.
