SC Humanities Grant provides scholarship to the Pawleys Island Writers’ Conference

The Pawleys Island Writers Conference is growing thanks to support from Litchfield Books and a grant from South Carolina Humanities. Writers from all over the state will learn from some of the best authors and teachers in the industry. Because of the $1,000 grant from SC Humanities, South Carolina Writers Association is offering a scholarship to any SC resident or anyone enrolled in an MFA program in South Carolina. South Carolina Writers Association (SCWA) board President, Carol-Ann Rudy says, “We are grateful to both Litchfield Books and South Carolina Humanities. Both organizations have been an invaluable help in making the 2018 Conference possible.”
SCWA Conference Chair, Amber Wheeler Bacon says, “This conference is a chance for writers and storytellers in all stages of their writing lives to learn from masters in the field. We are so pleased to be able to offer this scholarship to a deserving South Carolina writer so they have the opportunity to learn from our distinguished faculty.” Attendees will participate in workshops with nationally recognized authors and editors, including, Therese Anne Fowler: author of Z: a Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald and A Well-Behaved Woman; David Gates: Pulitzer Prize nominated novelist and short story writer; Gary Jackson: Cave Canem awarding winning poet; John Kessel: Nebula Award winning novelist and short story writer; Leigh Stein: novelist, memoirist, poet; Meg Reid: writer, editor, book designer, and Director of Hub City Press; and Jonathan Heinen: writer and Managing Editor of Crazyhorse.

The mission of South Carolina Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. This not-for-profit organizationpresents and/or supports literary initiatives, lectures, exhibits, festivals, publications, oral history projects, videos and other humanities-based experiences that reach more than 250,000 citizens annually. South Carolina Humanities receives funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as corporate, foundation and individual donors. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from throughout the state.
Established in 1990, the South Carolina Writers Association is a literary arts organization serving both new and established writers. Nearly every type of writing is represented from poetry to mainstream novels to short stories to non-fiction. SCWA offers a supportive environment for people to become better writers. SCWA membership is open to anyone at least 18 years of age, providing a wide range of opportunities to improve one’s writing, network with others, and gain practical how-to information about getting published.
