Charleston Animal Society over capacity: Adoption Crisis

May 31, 2018

Charleston Animal Society is making an urgent plea to the community to please make room for one more. “In the past few weeks, we have been flooded with a late spring surge of dogs and cats,” said Charleston Animal Society Senior Director of Animal Services, Pearl Sutton.

The Animal Society facility at 2455 Remount Road is built to house 230 animals, and as of today, there are almost 900 animals in our care, most of whom need homes. To help with the overcrowding, Charleston Animal Society is offering free adoptions on all adult cats and dogs. The free adoptions are made possible thanks to the hosts of the ESPN Podcast “Free Cookies,” Kate Fagan and Kathryn Budig.

“We have made it through the majority of the year with a steady flow of adoptions, but right now we really need people to make room for one more,” Sutton said. “We are so thankful for community partners like the ‘Free Cookies’ podcast.”

Dogs and cats come spayed or neutered, with all shots and a microchip. There are also some “staff picks” available for adoption. If you adopt one of these incredible animals, you will receive an additional special gift at the shelter.

If you cannot adopt, please ask about “Operation Whiskers” at 843-329-1577, where you can foster one of our animals and find them a new home using your network of friends of family.
