PURE Theatre to Produce Fun Home by Jeanine Tesori, Lisa Kron, & Alison Bechdel and Stages by David Lee Nelson during 2018 Piccolo Spoleto Festival

This 2018 Piccolo Spoleto Festival, PURE Theatre is proud to produce the remount of Fun Home by Jeanine Tesori, Lisa Kron and Alison Bechdel, as well as the world premiere of Stages by playwright and PURE Core Ensemble member, David Lee Nelson.
Winner of the 2015 Tony® Awards for Best Musical and Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Fun Home is a coming-of-age story following graphic-novelist Alison as she, following the unexpected death of her father, dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. When produced at PURE in early 2018, performances were regularly sold out, and PURE is thrilled that this “exquisite…emotional powerhouse” (Chicago Tribune) will be returning to the King Street stage.
Stages, a new solo play by Piccolo Spoleto favorite David Lee Nelson (The Elephant in My Closet, A Sudden Spontaneous Event), chronicles the 2017 event that would change Nelson’s life. At 38 years old he was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. He kept a blog of his time in chemotherapy – a heartbreakingly funny chronicle of a disease which affects over nine million Americans. This material became the basis for his newest solo play. Stages is not simply a play about sickness; it’s a story of life’s setbacks and surprises, and about searching for hope in the most unlikely of places.
