Congressman Clyburn breaks ground at South Carolina Water Project Extension

February 12, 2018

Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn issued the following statement on the groundbreaking of the Dorchester Reach of the Lake Marion Regional Water Agency.  The Dorchester Reach is the latest extension of the Lake Marion Regional Water Agency and will serve the communities of Harleyville and Ridgeville in Dorchester County.  It will also provide water to the site of Volvo’s new manufacturing facility in Berkeley County.

Clyburn Statement:

“From the beginning of my service in Congress, I have worked to bring good, clean, water service to rural communities throughout South Carolina, especially those that have been historically neglected.  The Lake Marion Regional Water Agency is the result of 25 years of planning and coordination.  The original authorization for the water system passed Congress in 1999, and so far, nearly $60 million in federal funds have been provided for the project.

“Adequate water service is critical to both the public health of residents and to attracting the type of economic development needed to provide good jobs in our communities.  Volvo’s new development is a great example.  Once completed, the facility is expected to employ 3,900 people.  I will continue to advocate for investments in South Carolina and America’s rural, historically neglected communities so that they can have the infrastructure and economic growth they deserve.”

Local leaders joined Clyburn at the ceremony.  Lake Marion Regional Water Agency Chairman Johnnie Wright stated:

“We are excited about this project which will serve the Harleyville and Ridgeville communities and provide opportunities for employment for years to come.  We are thankful for the years of commitment and the vital role Congressman Clyburn has played in developing this regional water system.  The support provided by him, Senators Graham and Scott, Congressmen Sanford and Wilson, and the rest of the SC Congressional Delegation has been instrumental in expanding clean water service to business, industry and the citizens of our state.  This effort would not be successful without the active involvement of our U.S. Congressional Delegation.”

Dorchester County Council Chairman Jay Byars stated:

“Dorchester County is committed to making our county a great place to live and do business. This is a major step forward. The Dorchester Water Reach will provide the water required for economic development, community development, and fire protection.”

Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler stated:

“Regional cooperation works. The Dorchester Reach, which will provide water to Berkeley County and the Volvo Plant, is an example of how we can be successful when we work together.”
