Mayor Tecklenburg signs Declaration of Understanding with City of Doha

At a special reception this morning for a high-level visiting delegation from the nation of Qatar, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and His Excellency Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad Al-Thani, State of Qatar Ambassador to the United States, signed a Declaration of Understanding encouraging a spirit of cooperation between the two cities.

The agreement is intended to be the beginning of a new relationship, to bring about a better understanding of diverse cultures and people, and to develop friendships, mutual interests, and cooperation.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said, “As one of America’s oldest and most significant east coast ports, the city of Charleston has long prized its international relationships. With this declaration, we are announcing our intent to form deeper, stronger ties with the people of Doha, Qatar, and we look forward to the future our two cities will share.”

His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abd al-Rahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, said, “Doha is a city of opportunity and economic strength, quickly emerging as one of the world’s most consequential trade hubs. Today, we take the first step toward a long and productive relationship with the city of Charleston and its people, who have welcomed our delegation this week. Together, Charleston and Doha will develop a bond of prosperity and mutual benefit in the years ahead.”
