The Footlight Players brings ‘Creepy and Kooky’ Addams Family to life for fall production

September 20, 2017

Everyone’s favorite creepy and kooky family comes to The Footlight Players stage in October with an original story – and it’s every father’s nightmare. The Footlight Players will perform this musical production from Oct. 20 to Nov. 5 at the historic Footlight Theatre, 20 Queen St.

Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother.

Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Shannon Horn, theatre teacher at Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville, is directing her first production with The Footlight Players. She has been teaching theatre to middle and high school students for more than 20 years and has directed more than 60 school and community theatre productions.

“This show is a campy, fun-loving musical that draws us into a family of ‘unique’ characters that we all know from their cartoon forms or movies,” Horn said. “My goal was to find a side of the characters that we have not seen before, and their struggles that would make them seem like just any normal family.”

Wednesday is not a little girl anymore, and she is starting to find her own place, but still wants her parents’ approval. Pugsley is learning that he may lose someone he thought would always be by his side. Gomez and Morticia struggle with their relationship, as any couple does, Horn noted.

“However, through those darkest moments, they find themselves, and discover that love will always triumph — love for family, love for each other, and love for the unknown,” Horn said. “Something we should all look toward as humans in a world of chaos: some semblance of peace in the darkness.”

Performances are at 8 p.m. Oct. 20, Oct. 21, Oct. 27, Oct. 28, Nov. 2, Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 with Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5.

Tickets are $35 for adults, $32 for military/seniors and $25 for students. This performance is suitable for ages 13 and up. Order tickets online at footlightplayers.net or by calling the box office at 843-722-4487.
