Youth to clean up litter in West Ashley for Global Youth Service Day

April 19, 2017

The City of Charleston’s renewed focus on West Ashley continues this Saturday, April 22, with West Ashley Clean Sweep, a “clean city” trash pickup from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at West Ashley High School (4060 W Wildcat Blvd, Charleston, SC 29414). The event is a part of the city’s commitment to Global Youth Service Day, and people ages five to twenty-five are invited to sign up online to participate.

West Ashley Clean Sweep is being organized by Youth Volunteer Corps of Charleston in partnership with Keep Charleston Beautiful.

City of Charleston Mayor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families youth programs coordinator Jennifer Gorham said, “We are excited to have been selected by Youth Service America to serve as a lead agency for this year’s GYSD. As a Youth Volunteer Corps affiliate, we have the unique opportunity to connect our growing network of youth volunteers with Keep Charleston Beautiful to organize what we hope to be a rewarding event for both the participants and the residents of West Ashley.”

GYSD is an annual campaign that recognizes the millions of children and youth who positively impact their communities through service-oriented projects. As the largest and longest-running service event in the world, GYSD is the only one dedicated to the contributions made by children and youth year-round.
