Winter weather may differ across the country, but even without the single-digit temps and snowstorms, we have our fair share of cold, wet weather.

Since it appears to be here for the next few weeks, I decided to put together a little checklist of some of my favorite winter weather essentials.  They are guaranteed to keep you warm and stylish now and long into the new year.

Be sure to nab these while they’re on sale or ask Santa to leave them under your tree:

1.    The parka.  Nothing will brace you from the winter rain and dropping temperatures better than a parka, plus they happen to be the ‘it’ coat of the season.  Parkas are durable, water-resistant and the fur-trimmed hood adds a little something extra.  These coats also come in classic down-filled or Thinsulate versions if you want to keep the warmth without the bulk.

2.    Plaid shirts.  These iconic items are synonymous with winter.  Whether you wear a heavyweight one over a thermal top or a thin one under your favorite wool sweater, plaid shirts will never go out of style.  If you want to give these shirts a modern twist pair them another pattern.  Navajo and Fair Isle are two seasonal options that will look great paired with plaids.

3.    Sturdy boots.  Whether you’re hiking through the woods or just the city jungle, puddles won’t be a problem with a pair of leather, lace-up boots.  These rugged, yet refined footwear work just as well with chinos as they do jeans, but if you want to add a little extra warmth and personal style don’t forget your camp socks.

4.    A wool sweater.  Essential for days out running errands or just sitting by the fireplace, you can practically live in a wool sweater during the winter.  Oversized sweaters are very popular this year, but that doesn’t mean you have to ditch your classic-fit crewnecks.  Any style, any color, any wool will do.

5.    Hats, gloves and scarves.  Classic winter accessories that we’ve all worn since we were children, but maybe it’s time to upgrade your collection.  Whether you choose Merino wool or cashmere these relatively small pieces can add layers of luxury to your look.  Plus they make great gifts everyone is sure to love.

Over the past few rainy days it’s been really hard for me to get motivated to leave the house, but when I do I reach for the same key pieces repeatedly.  I hope that you find them as versatile, stylish and useful as I do.
