More Must-Read Books for 2016 – Learn Leadership from Lincoln

January 25, 2016

By Jerry Bellune

Abraham Lincoln was an unlikely president.
A backwoods lawyer with no political power.
But he found a way to win his rivals support.
This is an example any of us could benefit from.

• Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of
Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin
As an award-winning historian, Goodwin writes more
like a novelist, a refreshing way to learn from history.
Lincoln’s keen understanding of human behavior helped
him unite the men who also ran for the office.
Ever humble, Lincoln surrounded himself with ambitious,
strong-willed men unafraid to challenge him.
In bringing the best out of each of them, he showed his
single-most admired leadership trait.
Can we bring competitors together for a cause?

• On Becoming a Leader by Warren Bennis
This is one of the first leadership books I read.
It had a profound effect on my thinking.
Bennis draws from hundreds of interviews to answer
one vital question: What is a good leader?
He examines the attributes of leaders who unite others
in a common purpose, It’s well worth your time.

At the risk of appearing self-serving, two other books:
• Lead People, Manage Things, Volume 1:
18 strategies to inspire your people to great heights
As a leader, you make sure the right things get done.
As a manager, you make sure they’re done right.
That’s an important distinction. Both are necessary.
Business leader Scott Adams says this “will inspire,
challenge and motivate seasoned managers.”

• Lead People, Manage Things, Volume 2:
What It Costs to Be the Boss
This book is available in a downloadable digital edition
with a $200 certificate for 1-on-1 coaching.
You can use it as a study guide for you and your team to
develop shared values and greater esprit de corps.
Both books are available by going to JerryBellune.com
