Keeping Style Simple – Not Boring

Classic. Traditional. Conservative. These are some of the most sought-after styles that seem simple to pull off, but in reality are hard to do right.

The goal is an outfit that is impeccable, chic and pulled together, but like most things when the elements are simple they not only have to be pristine they also need to be meticulously planned. Without those elements your look is just boring. Here are a few tips to remember when creating your classic style:

1.    Detailed, not embellished. One of the hallmarks of traditional style is a sleek, streamlined silhouette that is deceptively simple. Since there are no bells or whistles with this style or overt embellishments, you need some visual interest to add dimension and movement. Seams, darts, hemlines and construction all work together to create an interesting, under-the-radar, esthetic that captures your eye and attention.

This rule also applies to your jewelry and accessories. They should be understated and virtually unnoticeable on their own, but when paired with your outfit, add that intangible polished element that pulls everything together.

2.    Monochromatic. Following the simple, understated theme often means keeping your color palette neutral, but that isn’t the only option. You can pull off a classic, traditional style with color as long as you keep them soft or muted. Your wardrobe can and should extend beyond blue; black; grey and beige.   The classic ‘pop of color’ approach does not work with this style. Every element should blend together with nothing popping out at you.

3.    Geometric shapes. What keeps this look interesting is the shapes used, particularly when it comes to dresses.   Using elements of geometry in necklines and construction details help with movement, while playing with hemlines of both the skirt and sleeves maintain modesty and the esthetic while keeping it modern and age appropriate.

4.    Tailored. Not only do you need to look for off the rack pieces that are tailored, you need to work with an actual tailor for everything. To pull together a classic, conservative look well every piece needs to fit you like a glove, and the only way to do that is having it altered. Yes it’s time consuming and another step in the process, but a centimeters matter when they are the focal point.

Creating a timeless style isn’t just about buying conservative pieces, and it certainly isn’t easy. It actually takes more time, planning and investment to curate a wardrobe of classic pieces than any other, but the rewards are worth the work.
