SCE&G Sets Super Module CA20 in V.C. Summer Unit 2 Nuclear Island

CAYCE, SC – South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE:SCG), placed on May 9, 2014, the CA20 module in the nuclear island of V.C. Summer Unit 2. Considered a “super” module because it is too large to transport and requires assembly on site in the 12-story Module Assembly Building, CA20 is part of the auxiliary building that is located outside and adjacent to the containment vessel.

The CA20 module will house fuel handling and storage areas as well as other important plant systems. It has a footprint measuring about 70 feet long by 50 feet wide and stands approximately 70 feet tall—roughly the equivalent of a five-story building. With a total load weight of approximately 2 million pounds, or just over 1,000 tons, CA20 is one of the heaviest lifts on the construction site.

About 2,500 Chicago Bridge & Iron and Westinghouse personnel and subcontractor personnel are currently involved in constructing two new reactors at V.C. Summer in Fairfield County, S.C, where Unit 1 has operated safely and reliably for more than 30 years. The new nuclear project should peak at about 3,000-3,500 workers during certain points of construction. The two 1,117-megawatt AP1000 units will add 600 to 800 permanent jobs when operational. Once the two units are complete, SCE&G anticipates its generation mix will be about 30 percent nuclear, 30 percent natural gas, and 30 percent scrubbed coal, with the balance in hydro, solar and biomass.
