SCRA Congratulates SC Academy of Science Award Winners
July 23, 2012Five Individuals Recognized for Outstanding Work in Scientific Research
COLUMBIA, SC – July 23, 2012- SCRA congratulated therecipients of the South Carolina Academy of Science’s Governor’s Awardsfor Excellence in Science. Yesterday, Governor Nikki Haley presentedfive awards to researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina(MUSC), the University of South Carolina (USC), the University of SouthCarolina – Aiken and Clemson University. Each award recognizedexcellence in a different area of science.
The five awards, sponsored by SCRA, MeadWestvaco and Michelin NorthAmerica, honor individuals or teams within South Carolina that have madeextraordinary achievements and contributions to science. SCRA sponsoredtwo awards for Excellence in Scientific Research, won by Dr. PeterKalivas, Director and Chair of the Neuroscience Department at MUSC andDr. Mike Sutton, Professor at USC’s Department of MechanicalEngineering. SCRA also sponsored the Predominantly UndergraduateInstitution Award for Excellence in Science, won by Dr. Garriet Smith,professor of Biology at USC- Aiken.
Other awardees were Dr. Melissa Moss, Associate Professor of ChemicalEngineering at USC, sponsored by Michelin North America and Dr. JoshuaSummers, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at ClemsonUniversity, sponsored by MeadWestvaco.

The South Carolina Academy of Science, founded in 1924, is a state-wide,interdisciplinary science organization. Membership is open for anyonewith an interest in science. The Governor’s Awards for Excellence inScience were established in 1985.
