Local builder joins East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, Inc. in nationwide building effort
June 13, 2012Professional homebuilders help Habitat hammer home the need for affordable housing
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – May 31, 2012 – Structures Building Company is again partnering with East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, Inc. to raise walls on a home and give hope to low-income families seeking decent and affordable housing East of the Cooper as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz 2012.
During this year’s event, the nationwide project seeks to build and renovate more than 200 homes, thanks to the skilled labor provided by local professional homebuilders and construction firms.
Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz is a partnership between Habitat affiliates and the building community to build and renovate homes across the United States. Builders and Habitat affiliates work closely to organize all aspects of building, including securing subcontractors and suppliers, fundraising and seeking donations of materials. Builders participating in the program this year will work with more than 100 Habitat affiliates.
“We are excited to partner with builders and engage them in our work to help families in need of affordable housing,” said Jonathan Reckford, Habitat for Humanity International CEO. “By sharing their talents and skills with us, we are able to increase our capacity to help transform communities. We thank the builders for their commitment and dedication to making Home Builders Blitz 2012 a success.”
Locally, Structures Building Company and owner Steve Kendrick gathered subcontractors and suppliers to obtain materials and professional labor for the build.
“The effort being made by Steve and all his subcontractors and suppliers to build a home for a low income family is an example for us all. We almost don’t expect this kind of generosity in this economy, but Steve has gone the extra mile to be sure and give back to the community. This is Steve’s second donation of a home, having donated one previously in East Cooper Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz in 2008.” said Bob Hervey, Executive Director of East Cooper Habitat for Humanity.
The home being built by Structures Building Company is being constructed in one week from June 1 to June 8 on Kent Street in Mount Pleasant, just off Mathis Ferry Road. While it normally takes five or six months for East Cooper Habitat to construct a house, the Builders Blitz program is a coordinated effort by East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, Structures Building Company, subcontractors, suppliers, Town of Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant Waterworks, SCE&G and all their suppliers. The only part of the process that is done ahead of time is the foundation, which in this case was funded by the Exchange Club of Charleston and the Coastal Carolina Fair.

About East Cooper Habitat for Humanity
East Cooper Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, servicing the communities east of the Cooper River in South Carolina. East Cooper Habitat for Humanity constructs simple, decent homes using donated funds and volunteer labor. We work in partnership with working, low-income families who are not able to qualify for a conventional mortgage, providing a “hand up” not a “hand out.” Homeowners must contribute “sweat equity” by working on Habitat projects and sign an interest-free mortgage which must be paid over a number of years.
