College of Charleston Student-Athlete Elle Brewer Receives $5,000 Family Circle Cup Scholarship

Track & Field Standout Selected for Academic Achievement and Community Service
CHARLESTON, SC – March 13, 2012 – The Family Circle Cup has selected sophomore Elle Brewer, a Communications major and Cross Country / Track & Field student-athlete, as it’s 2012 College of Charleston scholarship winner. In addition to a $5,000 grant from the tournament, Brewer will participate in the coin toss prior to the first night session match on stadium court, Tuesday, April 3rd, during the Family Circle Cup. Marking the tournament’s 40th year, the Family Circle Cup will be held March 31 – April 8, 2012 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in the Best Tennis Town in America, Charleston, S.C.
The Family Circle Cup’s community outreach program is all about making a difference in the Charleston tri-county area. In 2002, the tournament started a scholarship grant at the College of Charleston for outstanding female student-athletes who excel both on and off the playing field. For the 11th consecutive year, $5,000 has been donated to a well-rounded student based on a number of criteria including academic achievement, community involvement, financial need, and athletic prowess.
Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, and pursuing a degree in Communications with minors in Media Studies, Studio Art, and Spanish, Brewer has maintained three consecutive years of Good Academic Standing with an impressive 3.93 GPA. Her classroom efforts earned her several accolades including being named to The College’s Director of Athletics Honor Roll, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and Golden Key Honor Society.
As a walk-on student-athlete, Brewer was selected as a member of The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team in 2010, and was recognized as the College of Charleston Cross Country Athlete of the week in both 2010 and 2011. She is currently a College of Charleston Student Athletic Advisory Board (SAAB) member, active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and an Honor Board Member, which is a very highly respected student position within The College.
In addition to her demanding academic and athletic responsibilities, Brewer was able to donate over 100 hours throughout 2011 as a volunteer with the Charleston-based Girls Day Out training program, Fitcatz Run Buddies inner-city youth running program, as well the Charleston Jewish Community Center’s annual Kid’s Fair event.
Each scholarship applicant was asked to write an essay on their qualifications for this scholarship. Through her letter, Brewer conveyed that hard work, both in the classroom and on the track, as well as in the community, forms the foundation of her personality.
”Over the past two years, I have learned a great deal about being a hard-working student athlete. Whether in the classroom or as a teammate, I strive to be my best in every area of my life,” said Brewer. “I believe that volunteering and being an active member of our community is an essential part of the college experience.”
