CSU hosts Youth Financial Literacy Summit
February 21, 2012CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston Southern University will be the host site for the second annual Youth Financial Literacy Summit on Saturday, March 3. The event is organized by The Homeownership Resource Center, a division of Family Services, Inc., the Junior Achievement of Coastal South Carolina and Neighbor Works.
Youth and young adults will learn basic budgeting and credit concepts that will help them develop sound financial management skills. Classes will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. and will include seminars focused on banking basics, how to use a debit card, The Rule of 72 – The Power of Time, how to budget, smart credit principles and how to find a job.
The participants will be divided into three age appropriate groups – 12-15, 16-18 and 19-21 — for three different hour-long sessions including a presentation by Charleston Southern University’s Financial Aid office for college-ready students.
“A majority of the persons we serve have said, time and time again, that they wish they had this information early on, like in high school,” said Carolyn Lecque, counselor for the Homeownership Resource Center. “As an addition to the success we found with the classes we already offer for consumers and homeowners we decided that younger would be even better.”
The Homeownership Resource Center, a division of Family Services, Inc., is a HUD approved housing counseling agency, and a NeighborWorks Chartered Organization. Family Services, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and a Trident United Way Funding Partner (please see the website at www.fsisc.org).
“The lesson that we would want participants to take away from this event is that ultimately, it is the person who understands and practices the sound principles of budgeting, saving and managing credit who will enjoy success, and be better able to provide for himself/herself, and/or his or her family,” said Lecque.
The Summit will conclude with a free concert by Charleston Southern University’s Elevate Band. For more information, or to register, visit www.moneyrocks2012.com.
