Department of Justice Approves Redistricting Plan

January 18, 2012

ST. GEORGE, SC – January 18, 2012 – The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the redistricting plan submitted by the County.

After the decennial Census, the County district lines are redrawn to allow for the change of population throughout the county. Each district is drawn in a way that allows for them to balance population wise.

The purpose is to bring balance to the representation of citizens to Council members and to come in to compliance of the 1965 Voting Rights Act as amended. This process is performed under the direction of Department of Justice (DOJ).

Plan 7 was selected by County Council and recommended by the South Carolina Budget and Control Board. All seven plans are available on the Dorchester County web site under “County Council”, then “Redistricting.”

“Dorchester County Council is pleased to learn that the recently submitted County Council redistricting plan has been approved by the Department of Justice. The new Council district boundaries ensure that voters are fairly and equitably represented,” said Council Chairman Larry Hargett.
