Recent Developments in the Ethics of Law Firm Marketing Presented by Barbara Seymour, Deputy Disciplinary Counsel to the Supreme Court of South Carolina

Please join us for a Legal Marketing Association (LMA) luncheon at Halls Chophouse on King Street. Included will be a presentation on SC Ethics and Rules related to marketing materials. Barbara Seymour, Deputy Disciplinary Counsel to the Supreme Court of South Carolina will serve as our guest speaker at this meeting. Attorneys wishing to attend will receive one CLE credit in ethics.
Summary This program will include a review of the ethical requirements and restrictions on lawyer advertising and solicitation, with a special emphasis on recent case law and revisions to the South Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct. Participants learn how to avoid the ethical pitfalls of law office marketing, focusing particularly on issues related to new media, including websites, online directories, Internet ads, and social and professional networking sites.
Presenter Barbara Seymour is the Deputy Disciplinary Counsel to the Supreme Court of South Carolina where she investigates and prosecutes grievances filed against lawyers. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1993. Barbara worked as a trial lawyer from 1993 to 2000. She served as an adjunct instructor in the Professional Legal Assistants Program at Converse College and currently teaches as an adjunct in the Paralegal Degree Program at Midlands Technical College. Barbara is a member of the South Carolina Bar, the Georgia Bar (inactive), and the National Organization of Bar Counsel. She currently serves on the Law Related Education Committee and the Professional Responsibility Committee at the South Carolina Bar. Barbara is the creator and coordinator of the Legal Ethics and Practice Program (LEAPP), which includes ethics, advertising, and trust account schools, sponsored by the Supreme Court and the South Carolina Bar.
