October 12, 2011Hilton Head Island, SC – October 27, 2011 – South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities (SCGSAH) music students are performing in Hilton Head as part of the 2011 Music Outreach Tour. The free-to-the-public concert will be held at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Thursday, October 27 at 8pm.
The evening’s music is performed by SCGSAH music students under the direction of SCGSAH faculty. The Concertato String Orchestra, directed by Kathryn Dey, will perform works by Paul Hindemith, Arvo Part, and Benedikt Brydern. The Opera Workshop, under the direction of Tom Dickinson and coached by Nancy Smith, will perform highlights from operas including Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss. Piano Ensembles directed by Stephen Taylor will perform works by Georges Bizet and Francis Poulenc. The Wind Ensemble, directed by David Hamilton, will perform works by Giovanni Gabrieli, Peter Mennin, and Gustav Holst. It promises to be a wonderful evening for music lovers.

This performance is part of the annual SCGSAH music tour, in which students travel across the state to entertain area schools and communities. During the day, these students will be performing concerts at Hilton Head High School and Beaufort High School. The 45 minute performances feature a variety of music with enriching comments about the styles, idioms, and composers.
These tours provide the students with a chance to perform for a variety of school audiences across the state, says Dr. David Hamilton, Chair of the SCGSAH Music Department. The repeated performances allow the musicians a chance to perfect their presentation of music and to reach out to South Carolina’s students.
The 2011 Music Outreach Tour, co-organized by The Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation, is a way for SCGSAH to thank communities for continuing to support the arts and this state-funded school. It also provides a snapshot of what a talented student with a passion for the arts can achieve while attending SCGSAH.
This Tour will open doors of opportunity for our state’s best musicians as they explore the possibility of immersion in a music program at the Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities, says Cathy Jones, Executive Director for the Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation.
The SCGSAH music students look forward to showcasing their talents and hard work to the welcoming audience of Hilton Head Island.
This year’s Tour is funded in part by Euphoria and Local Boys Do Good of Greenville, SC.
