Navy League Charleston Hosts 236TH United States Navy Birthday Celebration aboard USS Yorktown at Patriots Point
50TH Anniversary of US Naval Sea Cadet Corps Yorktown Division Also Honored with Fundraiser and Silent Auction
CHARLESTON, SC – October 14, 2011 – Sailors young and old are invited to board the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point when Navy League Charleston hosts a cocktail party and benefit in honor of the 236th birthday of the United States Navy and the 50th anniversary of the Yorktown Division of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, October 14th from 6 pm to 10:30 pm.
The celebration includes the Naval Sea Cadets’ change of command ceremony, a cutting of the Navy’s birthday cake by the oldest and youngest Sailors and a silent auction to support the Naval Sea Cadets in Charleston.
Festivities get underway at 6:30 pm, and an open bar begins serving at 7:15. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, dancing and live music will be featured from the 50’s and 60’s cover band Rich Hippey and Circa 56. Doug Heath, the former lead guitarist of Paul Revere and the Raiders, will perform as part of the ensemble.
As there is no formal ‘Navy Ball’ scheduled this year, which had been the practice in our region for quite some time, Navy League Charleston is preserving the connection to our naval heritage, joining forces with the Yorktown Division of the US Naval Sea Cadets in arranging this reception. The evening promises a unique gathering of three (or more) generations of retired, active duty, and prospective sea service professionals, said Navy League Charleston President Russ Keller.

Come and celebrate our nation’s naval history both young and old. The Navy is the second oldest service and we think that is worth celebrating said Kerry Williamson, outgoing Commanding Officer of the United States Naval Sea Cadets, Yorktown Division.
