Michael Mitchell Gallery to Celebrate Mayor's Purchase Award and this year's Winner Jim Victor

July 13, 2011

CHARLESTON, SC – July 13, 2011 – Since the late 80’s, the Mayor’s Purchase Award has been given to a Piccolo Spoleto Artist whose body of work is expansive, special and cutting edge. This year’s winner selected by Judge/Sculptor from UNC Chapel Hill, Professor Jaun Logan, is Charleston Artist Jim Victor.

A reception will be held at 5:00 PM July 21 at the Michael Mitchell Gallery, which represents Victor, . Mayor Riley will attend along with other Piccolo officials and members of Charleston’s art community. The pubic is invited. Michael Mitchell Gallery is at 438 King Street. Parking is available at the Visitors Center Garage on Mary Street between King and Meeting.

Victor placed second in last year’s outdoor exhibition with Mystery and returned this year to capture the Mayor’s Purchase Award with Sublime. The radiant red and textured 64-inch square oil/acrylic captured the judge’s eye, and will now reside in the Mayor’s office for the next year before circulating through city offices with the City of Charleston collection.

Artists Billie Sumner and Victoria Ellis were fundamental in putting together the award program and Outdoor Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Show, with oversight from Ellen Dressler Moryl and the Charleston Department of Cultural Affairs. Although it’s still called the Mayor’s Purchase Award, entry fees are used to secure the painting for the City’s collection.

Michael Mitchell Gallery displays Victor’s work along with 30 other regional artists, in their unique space next to Halls Chophouse on Upper King Street.
