Charleston Digital Corridor and Local Tech Companies Provide Funding for Female Youth Program
June 22, 2011CHARLESTON, SC – June 22, 2011 – As a proponent of encouraging women to pursue careers in science andmathematics and understanding that talent is the key driver of aknowledge economy, the Charleston Digital Corridor teamed up with several member companies to provide funding for the Women In Charge program at Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant.
The Digital Corridor led this effort by choosing Women-In-Charge as one of the beneficiaries of its annual iFive:K race,a yearly fundraiser for the Charleston Digital Corridor ScholarshipFund. “Developing local talent at an early stage is an importantcomponent of our knowledge based business development strategy,” saidDigital Corridor Director, Ernest Andrade.

Additional corporate support was made by Digital Corridor member companies: Environmental Express, PeopleMatter, HurryHurry, SPARC, Avista Solutions and Surya Organics which raised a total of $3,000 for the Women-In-Charge program.

Thefunding, which will be earmarked for the 2011-2012 school year, enables7th and 8th grade girls at Moultrie Middle School to participate in theWomen in Charge program — a two-year science and math course designedto educate and encourage young women to pursue a career in math, scienceor business.
