Septima Clark Parkway Now Official

May 20, 2010

CHARLESTON, SC – May 20, 2010 – Several years ago, the City of Charleston and the South Carolina Department of Transportation honored Septima P. Clark, revered teacher, community activist and civil rights leader, by erecting a marker along a highway then known as “The Crosstown Expressway”. At that time the Crosstown Expressway became known as the Septima P. Clark Parkway but the designation was symbolic in nature as the official records for the expressway remained “Crosstown” and the actual street name signs remained with the “Crosstown” name.

At the request of Councilmember Dudley Gregorie and Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. the name ‘ Crosstown Expressway’  was officially changed to the Septima P. Clark Parkway on April 21, 2010. New street name signs indicating the new official roadway name will be installed by the City’s Traffic & Transportation Department in the next few days marking the official new name for the roadway that was built in 1964.

The City of Charleston has received a federal grant to address transportation improvements for the Septima P. Clark Parkway that will include the replacement of the roadway drainage collection system, construction of new sidewalks, new crosswalks, resurfacing of the roadway, construction of a new center raised median that will have beautiful landscaping, and the landscaping of the sidewalks.
