Health Sciences South Carolina Welcomes Thornburg, Fryar and Mart

COLUMBIA, SC – December 28, 2009 – Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) is pleased to welcome J. Todd Thornburg, PhD, Katrina Fryar, MBA, PMP, and Derek Mart to its staff. HSSC is a statewide biomedical research collaborative composed of South Carolina’s largest research-intensive universities and three largest health systems and is focused on utilizing research to transform the state’s economy, improve public health and spark job creation.
Thornburg joins HSSC as a senior program manager responsible for directing and managing highly complex projects and major federal, state and private grant initiatives. Thornburg also will oversee all aspects of the design, development, and implementation of complex projects. Prior to joining HSSC, Thornburg was the executive director of the Financial and Administrative Unit at the Translational Science Institute at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Western Carolina University and his PhD in biochemistry from Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
Fryar has been named program manager for HSSC and is responsible for analyzing the organization’s use of finances and resources. Fryar came to HSSC after working with Ventyx, Inc., in Columbia for more than 14 years, where she most recently served as the senior project manager and director of services development. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Clemson University. She earned her Master’s of Business Administration from Webster University in St. Louis.
Mart joins HSSC as a technical support engineer. With more than 13 years of experience working with computer software networks and programs, Mart will help maintain the electronic institutional review board (eIRB) system, a critical component of HSSC’s statewide research enterprise. His responsibilities include offering eIRB technical support to member organizations, training those who are new to the eIRB process, and troubleshooting problems. Mart earned his Associate of Applied Science degree from the Louisville Technical Institute and received computer and electronics training in the U.S. Navy.
All three will work at HSSC’s corporate office in Columbia.
Commenting on the staff additions, HSSC President and CEO Jay Moskowitz said, “HSSC has grown tremendously since its founding five years ago; our office alone has created more than 10 well-paying jobs. Todd, Katrina and Derek bring a wealth of experience that will help HSSC continue to grow, fulfill our mission, and be accountable to those who have invested in our organization such as the State of South Carolina through the Centers of Economic Excellence Program and The Duke Endowment.
Added Moskowitz, We are aggressively pursuing new investments, implementing new research projects and continuing to build our information technology infrastructure. It is absolutely essential to have the people in place who can support these and other efforts.
