Spirit Telecom Offers High-Definition Video Conferencing

April 14, 2009

CHARLESTON & COLUMBIA, SC – April 14, 2009 –  Spirit Telecom today announced the release of a high-quality video conferencing product that is simple to use and helps businesses reduce cost and increase productivity.

The product will become a key part of the Spirit On-Demand conferencing suite that includes voice and web conferencing.

It will use Scalable Video Coding (SVC), a technology developed by Vidyo, which allows the system to work on end user’s desktops using a broadband connection. Traditional video conferencing relied almost entirely on centralized Multipoint Control Units (MCUs), dedicated high-bandwidth lines, and special conferencing facilities.

Spirit’s video conferencing solution eliminates those requirements. Reservations are not required and conferences can be started and stopped at any time.

“We selected Vidyo because its technology eliminates typical web conferencing problems like choppiness, delayed audio and distorted images,” he said.

“The technology that enables us to provide conferencing to a much wider range of customers is especially important in our current economy — when more and more companies are restricting travel costs,” said Vernon Williams, president and CEO of Spirit.

“We can now offer quality video conferencing that is easy to use and that increases productivity while providing a quick return on investment,” Williams said.

The video conferencing will allow companies to include various users – from staff in a corporate headquarters conference room to individuals at home offices connecting over the Internet.

“Our partnership gives us a video conferencing solution that fits into our product mix of on-demand audio and web conferencing,” Williams said.

“It delivers the next generation of video conferencing, using Spirit’s converged network or, the public IP network. It allows our customers to participate in high-quality videos conferences from wherever they are,” Williams said.

Vidyo, which is based in Hackensack, N.J., has achieved global recognition including the DemoGod award, Best of Interop, and Frost & Sullivan’s Conferencing and Collaboration Product of the Year for 2009.
