5 students awarded annual SCHBSIF scholarship, awards dinner held

Five SC Students Receive College Scholarships from Workers’ Compensation Insurer

SCHB Self Insurers Fund is pleased to announce the recipients of their 20172018 Scholarship Award Program. Five $1,000 scholarships were awarded. An independent panel of judges who evaluated each applicant’s commitment to educational excellence, community service, and extracurricular activities selected the scholarship recipients. This year’s scholarship recipients are:

  • Danielle Savage, Edisto Island
  • Luke Wetzel, Greenville
  • Annsley Judy, Reevesville
  • William Patterson, Spartanburg
  • Mallory Faile, Lancaster

“It is such an honor to contribute to these young student’s futures through this scholarship fund,” said SCHB Self Insurers Fund Board Chairman, Herb Witter. “They have demonstrated a true desire to achieve, through extra curricular activities, involvement in their community, and dedication to their academic goals.”

Danielle Savage of Edisto Island will be attending Meredith College in North Carolina, pursuing a degree in Business and English Education. A junior varsity volleyball player, varsity cross-country athlete, and a member of the Colleton County Singers Chorus, Danielle held a full schedule of activities while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. “Danielle Savage is one of those individuals that come along once every decade,” said George Smith, her history teacher, “Danielle breathes life into anything she is a part of.”

Luke Wetzel, Greenville, will be attending Clemson University, and will be majoring in Engineering. Luke is a Wade Hampton graduate and athlete, keeping a 3.96 GPA while maintaining the position of team captain for the wrestling team for two years, as well as captain of the soccer team for a year. Luke volunteered his time to work for the North Hills Community Church video team for three years and also worked with at his father’s painting company for six years. Luke has demonstrated the ability to balance work, life, and academics throughout his entire life. Luke’s Engineering and Science teacher had this to say about him: “I have been teaching for eight years with hundreds of students passing through my classroom and would not hesitate to name Luke as one of the top five students I have ever taught.”

Annsley Judy is currently attending the University of South Carolina, where she has made Dean’s List while working towards her major in Elementary Education. Annsley has been a dedicated member of her community, volunteering with her church at nursing homes and food banks for six years and with the JDRF Diabetes Walk for five years. Senator John Matthew, Jr. had this to say, “Annsley serves in my South Carolina Senate office as a legislative aide. She continues to prove to be an invaluable asset to the General Assembly as her interactions with community leaders, legislators, and the general public often brings accolades from all.”

William Patterson, of Spartanburg SC, has worked not only as home schooled student through the Upstate Association of Homeschools but also worked to manage his own landscaping company and volunteered ten years of work to his church including a student ministry to both Scotland and Indonesia. William will be attending Berea College in Kentucky where he plans to major in Technology and Applied Design. Thomas Madden, a customer of Luke’s landscaping business, said that William has “proved to be skilled in many areas and, more importantly, hardworking and reliable.”

Mallory Faile, an Andrew Jackson High School Graduate, has been a member of Andrew Jackson’s Varsity Cheerleading team for three years, a secretary of the Beta Club for two years and held a position in the National Honors Society for two years. Mallory has balanced her extracurricular activities and academics with great skill. While she just graduated high school, she simultaneously completed her freshman year of college. She also volunteers at her church, traveling to Peru and Africa for mission trips and helps tutor middle school students. Mallory plans to attend the University of South Carolina Upstate and pursue a degree in Nursing.

A celebratory scholarship dinner honoring Savage and Judy was held on July 26 at The Palmetto Club in Columbia, South Carolina. SCHB Self Insurers Fund presented the scholarship.
