The interior and exterior renovations at The Bakery at BullStreet in Columbia, S.C., received a Citation Award in Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse/Renovation; and the interior renovations of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia were recognized with a Divine Detail Award. Both projects also garnered Preservation Awards from Historic Columbia.
1×1 Design works with commercial clients across South Carolina and throughout the Southeast for new construction as well as renovations, masterplans, maintenance and upgrades in a variety of industry sectors, including corporate, office and industrial; government; retail, restaurant/hospitality and entertainment; nonprofit; faith/religion, education and healthcare; transportation; and multifamily housing, as well as selected single-family residential projects.
Asheley Scott St. John holds architectural registration in ten states and currently serves as president of the Board of Trustees of the Clemson Architectural Foundation. She is active in the community and has served as president of both AIA Columbia and the Contemporaries of the Columbia Museum of Art. A graduate of Leadership Columbia, she has been honored with the “Top 20 Under 40” designation by The State Newspaper and was named among the Midlands’ “Women to Watch” by Columbia Regional Business Report. An alumna of Clemson University (B.A., Design) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (MArch), St. John has been party to award winning project teams throughout her career.
A woman-owned firm with DBE certification, 1×1 Design launched in June 2011 and will celebrate its eight-year anniversary in June 2019. The company is comprised of six full-time staff, including an architect, an interior designer, three intern architects and one project coordinator.
Anna Gray Fender, IIDA, LEED AP, collaborates with St. John to lead the firm. She joined the 1×1 team in 2012, and incorporates her interior design expertise into all aspects of project design and management for the firm.
“Our team congratulates Asheley on this tremendous honor, and we extend our thanks for her leadership, not just within our firm but across our community as a mentor and trailblazer,” says Fender. “She has used architecture to serve the community in a way that teaches, unites and creates lasting opportunities for communities to connect, interact and expand. We join our peers across the region in applauding her for earning this well-deserved award.”
