Bobbitt constructs dental practice in historic Columbia building
September 28, 2015COLUMBIA, SC – Bobbitt Design Build recently completed construction on Columbia Smiles’ second high-end dental practice, which is located in the Historic Keenan Building at 1310 Lady St. in downtown Columbia.
Conveniently located on the sixth floor, Columbia Smiles’ interior is designed to match the restorations that the Keenan Building will be undergoing. The waiting room features trey ceilings and bulkheads trimmed with wood to accent the original wood installed in the 1930s. Portions of the existing hardwood floors and existing mosaic tile have been refinished to match the structure’s charm and character. The office also includes new state-of-the-art equipment, furnishings, an abundance of direct sunlight and LED lighting and views that overlook much of the City of Columbia.
Due to the building’s historic nature, Bobbitt accommodated a few challenges along the way by working around the layout of existing floors, such as hardwoods and mosaic tiles, and dealing with low ceiling heights. The design-build company took special consideration while constructing on the sixth floor by properly bringing the materials to the site and removing material debris.
Practice owner, Dr. Nick Pournaras, discussed his desire to start a second location for nearly five years with Bobbitt president, Ben Wilson. The pair are both members of the Columbia Executives and Owners Association. When Pournaras and his equipment representative, Stephen Raley from Henry Schein Dental, started to move forward with plans for the new office location, he came to Bobbitt to help guide him through the architectural, permitting, and construction process.
Columbia Smiles serves the needs of the downtown community and other area professionals who don’t have the time to leave the city for dental services.
